The Winter Bird Count
Each December, Mad Birders takes part in the National Audubon Society’s national bird census that documents bird populations across the country. Field teams spend one day looking for birds across a 15-mile Circle. Additionally birders within our Circle participate as feeder watchers.
You can participate in the field or from your own backyard as a feeder watcher—birders of all levels are welcome. Our territory covers much of the Mad River Valley, Northfield, parts of Roxbury, and over to Berlin Pond. Check out this map to see the Circle.
We end the day with a fabulous potluck where we share the species seen during the day!
The 2026 count will occur on Friday, December 18, with a snow date of Monday, December 20.
